Dr. Mohammad Rihan

Dr. Mohammad Rihan is a distinguished leader and researcher in solar energy, smart grid, and sustainable development, widely recognized for his contributions to India’s clean-energy transition. Author of Green Energy and Sustainable Development published by Cambridge University Press, a reference work on energy transition and sustainable development presenting a forward-looking perspective on how developing economies can transition to green energy. His book on Green Energy Transition in India presents the evolution of India into a leader in green energy.

He serves as Director General of National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), an autonomous institute of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India. At NISE he leads research and development, standardisation, consultancy, and capacity building for the Solar and Green Hydrogen sectors. He also serves as Chairperson of the BIS Sectional Committee on Solar Energy, guiding national standards essential for the quality, reliability, and global competitiveness of India’s solar industry.

A Professor of Electrical Engineering, Dr. Rihan has supervised doctoral research in solar energy and smart grids, with his scholars earning prestigious recognitions, including the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF). He previously led the integration of a 6.5 MWp solar PV into the distribution network of Aligarh Muslim University—one of the largest campus-level green and renewable energy deployments in India.

He was awarded the prestigious IEEE PES India Narain Hingorani Award 2025 for excellence in Solar PV Systems. He is a recipient of the Eminent Engineer Award 2026 by Delhi state centre of Institution of Engineers (India) for contributions to India’s clean energy transition. Dr. Rihan is elected Fellow of the IET (UK), Institution of Engineers (India), and IETE. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, chair-elect of the IEEE Uttar Pradesh Section, and past vice-chair of the IET (UK) Delhi Local Network, reflecting his sustained leadership in national and international professional communities. He is founding chair of a working group on Green Energy Net Zero and Sustainability under the UP section of IEEE (IEEE-UPGENS).
