Solar energy has become the primary driver of India's renewable energy transition and one of the most visible examples of the country's ability to scale clean energy at speed. Over the past decade, India has transformed solar power from an emerging technology into one of the largest and fastest-growing segments of its energy economy.
India's installed solar capacity has increased from 2.82 GW in March 2014 to 157.04 GW in July 2026, representing a more than 58-fold increase in just over a decade. In FY 2025–26 alone, the country added a record 44.61 GW of solar capacity, reflecting the pace at which solar deployment is accelerating across utility-scale, commercial and residential segments. At the same time, solar tariffs have declined from ₹5.50 per unit in 2013–14 to around ₹2.50 per unit today, making solar one of the most competitive sources of electricity generation in India.
This transformation has been enabled through a combination of ambitious policies and flagship government programmes. Large-scale solar parks have created world-class renewable energy infrastructure, while the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is accelerating rooftop solar adoption across households. The PM-KUSUM Scheme is supporting the solarisation of agriculture through solar pumps and decentralised solar power plants, helping farmers reduce energy costs while creating additional sources of income. Together, these initiatives have expanded access to clean energy while ensuring that the benefits of the renewable energy transition reach communities across urban and rural India.
India's solar journey extends beyond domestic deployment. Through the International Solar Alliance (ISA), launched jointly by India and France, the country has helped create a global platform for advancing solar energy adoption, capacity building and investment mobilisation, particularly across developing economies.
