Small hydropower continues to be an important component of India's renewable energy portfolio, particularly in mountainous and remote regions where decentralised clean energy solutions can play a transformative role. With relatively low environmental impact and the ability to provide reliable power close to demand centres, small hydropower supports both energy access and regional development.
India possesses significant small hydropower potential across Himalayan and riverine states. Over the years, the Government of India has supported the development of this sector through targeted policy interventions, financial assistance and programmes designed to encourage private sector participation and technological modernisation.
Unlike intermittent renewable energy sources, small hydropower projects can provide stable generation and contribute to grid balancing, making them valuable assets in an increasingly renewable-powered energy system. They also support local employment, infrastructure development and economic activity in remote regions.
