Sanjay Banga

Mr. Sanjay Banga serves as the President of Renewable Energy and the CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL). TPREL operates 6 GW of renewable assets and has an additional 4.5 GW under construction. The company operates a 4.6 GW solar cell and module manufacturing plant, also holding a leadership position in the rooftop solar market in India.

Before taking on this role, Mr. Banga was the President of the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) business at Tata Power, which included overseeing four electricity distribution companies in Orissa, as well as Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) and Tata Power Trading Corporation Ltd. As the CEO of Tata Power-DDL, he implemented a Total Quality Management system, making it the first global utility to receive the Deming Prize for Quality. Additionally, his employee-centric approach earned Tata Power-DDL recognition as one of the Top 5 Great Companies to Work for in 2019.

Mr. Banga believes that execution and operational excellence are essential differentiators for successful companies. He successfully led the transformation of all four Orissa discoms from loss-making entities to financially sustainable utilities, with three of them recognized by the Ministry of Power in the top A+ category in the 13th integrated report.

Mr. Banga, with over three and a half decades of experience in the power generation, transmission, and distribution business, brings expertise in the power sector, encompassing areas such as Business Development, Operations and Maintenance, Project Management, Technology, Utility Business Process Reengineering, and Regulatory Advocacy. The learning he gathered through associations with leading public and private sector electrical utilities and infrastructure businesses in India and abroad equips him to tackle the enormous challenges of the energy transition.

Mr Banga started his career with National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) as an Engineer Trainee. He is an alumnus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, and holds an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi. He has completed the Senior Executive Leadership Program at Harvard Business School. Mr. Banga is an avid reader and a regular contributor to leading newspapers. He enjoys playing sports such as tennis and Cricket.
